Anti-snap locks: what they are and whether you need one
How lock snapping works on euro cylinders, how to check your lock's rating and what to upgrade to.
What lock snapping is
Most uPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder lock. A basic cylinder has a weak point in the middle, and if it's snapped there the lock can be opened quickly. Anti-snap cylinders are built to break in a controlled way so the lock stays secure.
How to check yours
- Look at the face of the cylinder for a Kitemark with stars (TS007) or a Sold Secure Diamond mark.
- No marks usually means a basic cylinder.
- A cylinder sticking out more than a few millimetres past the handle is more exposed.
What to upgrade to
A cylinder rated TS007 3 star, or Sold Secure Diamond (SS312). A 1 star cylinder fitted with a 2 star security handle also gives a 3 star rating overall. A locksmith can measure the door and fit the right size, usually in well under an hour.
