Should you change the locks when you move house?
Why changing the locks after moving is worth it, what to fit, and what renters need to check first.
Usually, yes
You can't know how many keys are out there. Previous owners, tenants, builders, cleaners and estate agents may all have had one. On most uPVC and composite doors only the euro cylinder needs changing, which is a quick job.
What to fit
- uPVC and composite doors: an anti-snap euro cylinder rated TS007 3 star or Sold Secure Diamond.
- Timber front doors: a 5-lever mortice deadlock made to BS3621, which many home insurers ask for.
Check the wording of your home insurance policy before choosing, and keep the receipt.
If you rent
Read your tenancy agreement first. Many need the landlord's permission to change locks, and you'll usually need to give them a key. It's often simplest to ask the landlord to change the locks between tenancies.
